As a concept, used to refer to the purpose built municipal theatre of a town or city. (Stadskouburg in Afrikaans.) The term often incorporporated into the name of the particular theatre (Johannesburg Civic Theatre, Bloemfontein Civic Theatre, Bellville Civic Theatre, etc.)
