The Centre for African Literary Studies (CALS) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, (UKZN), South Africa, is an archival project which was launched in September 2004 and officially opened by the then national Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Pallo Jordan. Initially set up by Professor Liz Gunner and then Professor Jenny Clarence-Fincham as Acting Directors, it appointed Professor Mbulelo Mzamane as the first CALS director in January 2007.
