As part of the Shakespeare Tercentenary Celebration in Cape Town, a Shakespearian Concert, was presented in the Cape Town City Hall, on the evening of April 24th, 1916. Hosted by the Elizabethan Society and the National Home Reading Union. Patrons for the evening were Lord Buxton, the Governor-General; John X. Merriman; and Harry Hands, Mayor of Cape Town. The city orchestra rendered musical items, there were recitations and enactments from the plays, and Merriman made a speech. The artists were Mrs McGowan Kitching, Miss Edith te Water, Mr Alfred Holtzer, Miss Mina Freund, Miss de Marillac, Mr Reginald Metcalfe, Mr E.C. Dudley (who delivered a Prologue).
