(18*-19*) A medical doctor/academic, he was a member and later chairman of the society Ons Taal ("Our Language") in Bloemfontein. The society contributed greatly to cultural life, and the development of Afrikaans theatre in the city. Havenga and his wife Kitty (néé Kitty Maasdorp) later became important supporters of Hendrik Hanekom's Toneelskool ("Theatre School") in Bloemfontein.
