A member of Volksteater in Pretoria. Directed W.A. de Klerk's Vlamme oor La Roche for them in 1949. After Anna Neethling-Pohl left Volksteater in 1945, he took over as chairman and ran it for many years.
He acted in the NTO production of Koning Oidipus in 1955.

For many years, Johan van Rensburg’s name was synonymous with the legendary Afrikaans musical quiz show Noot vir Noot. He has played a significant role in promoting music in South Africa.
Training
He holds a BMus degree and BMus honours degree from Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Johan was a member of the student council of the former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in 1968. His work as musical director of the popular Alabama Studentegeselskap (Alabama Student Company) led to the first Revue programme in 1967. Johan stayed on in the same role until 1973, when he became director until 1980.
Johan was appointed producer and later specialist producer of Afrikaans Variety Programmes for light music at the SABC’s TV1 channel in 1980.
Johan, together with his business partner and fellow television personality Johan Stemmet, started Stemmburg Television in 1989 after leaving the SABC.
As former director of Afrikaans light music variety programmes at the then SABC TV1, he produced numerous Afrikaans entertainment programmes for local television, including well-known shows such as Platepraatjies, Teletreffers and Debuut. He coproduced Noot vir Noot for over a decade and was also a popular presence in Musiekfabriek, the show’s band.
Awards
He has received various accolades, including the NWU Chancellor’s Medal for his contribution to the advancement of Afrikaans cultural activities and his 50-year-long association with the NWU.
