Tsotsi the Musical is a musical play by Zwai Bala (1974/75*-) and Mkhululi Mabija.

The original text

Based on Athol Fugard's 1980 novel Tsotsi (1980) and the Gavin Hood film version, the musical tells the story of a hardened township criminal ("tsotsi") whose life changes forever after a bungled mugging leaves him caring for a stranger's baby. . The music was composed by Zwai Bala (1974/75*-) and book and words written by Mkhululi Mabija.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

2018: First produced by Cape Town Opera at the Artscape Theatre, Cape Town in 2018. Directed by Neil Coppen and Khayelihle Dominique Gumede, with choreography by Sonia Radebe, with a cast that included Mxolisi "Zuluboy" Majozi (as tsotsi) , Msizi Njapha, Busisiwe Ngejane, Bianca Le Grange, Kgomotso Matsunyane and Lindani Nkosi. Set design by Michael Mitchell and Neil Coppen, musical direction by Zwai Bala.
