A broad description of the role of a designer working in theatre film and so on, would be something like:

This is the person who decides what the performers will wear (costume) , what kind of environment they will inhabit (set), the objects or props would use, the lighting and/or sound of the show, and so on, and is usually called a theatre designer.

What he/she (or the design team) produce are referred to as the design.
