Originally instituted by the [[United Tobacco Company]] in 1965 and sponsored them until 1977,  whereafter the [[Oude Meester Foundation for the Performing Arts]] took over the sponsorship, the project the [[Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards]]. 
 
 
 
The awards were made for the first time in 1965, for the preceding year's productions.
