Originally introduced by the [[United Tobacco Company]], who sponsored them until 1977,  when the [[Oude Meester Foundation for the Performing Arts]] took over such awards, renaming the project the [[Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards]] in 1979. In 19** the foundation was renamed the [[Distell Foundation for the Arts]], though the awards retained the same name.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The awards were made for the first time in 1965, for the preceding year's productions.
