A short, highly regarded, dramatic monologue, it was written in 1972 and premiered at the Samuel Beckett Festival by the Repertory Theater of the Lincoln Center, New York on 22 November 1972, starring Jessica Tandy. Next performed at the Royal Court in London on 16 January 1973, featuring Billy Whitelaw. .
