Cisca Marais (1916 –1995) was an actress, scriptwriter, designer and book editor.

Biography

Born Francisca Kriel on 4 November, 1916. She married J.F.(Jacobus François) Marais and adopted Cisca Marais as the name under which she acted in a number of films.

She passed awa on 26 June, 1995.

She contributed to the performing arts in a variety of ways.


As stage actress

On the stage she appeared in Vrees, an Afrikaans adaptation of Rodney Ackland's play The Old Ladies, translated by J.F. Marais.

As film actress

She appeared as "Elsie" in Donker Spore (a film by Thomas Blok and J.F. Marais, 1944), and had roles in Paul Krüger (Werner Grünbauer/1956), Oupa for Sale (Richard Daneel/1968), Die Onwettige Huwelik (Mario Schiess/1970), Vinkel en Koljander (Roy Sargeant/1973)

As screenwriter and designer

She wrote the story for Carel Trichardt's only film as director, Sononder (1971), and also assisted with costumes and props.

As book editor

Co-compiler, with François Marais, of the one-act play collection Debuut: Eenakters en Hoorspele (1966)
