Mostellaria (The ghost [story]) is a Latin play by Plautus (c. 254 – 184 BC)[1].
Contents
The original text
The play is probably an adaptation of a lost comedy of the Athenian poet Philemon called Phasma ("the Ghost") and is set in a street in the city of Athens.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into English as Mostellaria, or the Haunted House by Henry Thomas Riley, published 1912.
Kevin P. Joyce's play When the Cat's Away is loosely based on Mostellaria, transposing the story from Athens to modern day Nantucket.
Translated and adapted into Afrikaans under the original Latin title by Dawid de Villiers, while a student at Stellenbosch University in 1978.
Performance history in South Africa
1978: Performed in the Afrikaans version in the Libertas-teater in Stellenbosch on 16 March as part of the USAT Dramafees, by the residences Helshoogte and Lydia at the University of Stellenbosch. Directed by Marlette Lindsay, with Gert Myburgh, Jakes Greyling, Estelle van den Bergh, Anneli Bellinghan, Leonard van Schalkwyk, Ann Ochse, Gielie van der Merwe, Jacques du Preez, Andries du Toit and Gerrie Ferreira. Stage manager Erhard Wolf, assisted by Bruce Rubidge and Reneé Basson.
