Die Voortreflike Familie Smit ("The excellent family Smith") can refer to both an Afrikaans film and an Afrikaans TV series based on an award winning novel of the same name by Anna M. Louw
The novel
Telling of the everyday life of a rural family that has moved to the city of Cape Town, as narrated by the teenage daughter Grietjie, the tale first appeared in the magazine Sarie Marais in 196*, and was then published in book form by in 1968. Louw received the Scheepersprys vir Jeugliteratuur for it in 1968.
The film
The story was adapted for film and directed by [[Kappie Botha]] with P.W. Botha, Helen van Pletzen, Ben van der Merwe, Bertha Visser, Jamima Wessels, Elma Marais and Louis van Niekerk. It was produced and and distributed by Carfo.
