He is the brother of actor Johan Malherbe. He passed away in July 1995.
Training
Career
He started off with the Kaapstadse Afrikaanse Toneelvereniging (K.A.T.) before becoming fully professional. Paul is well known for his stage, screen, radio and television work and has done repertory in England. He has directed plays and has lectured in Drama and designed both sets and costumes.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
He was seen as Lukophroon in Periandros van Korinthe and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, both these productions were in the 1950s.
He has appeared in Die Koopman van Venesië (for Fred Engelen, 1955), Faan se Trein, The Boxes, Dokter in Klipalleen (1984), "Dr Gompel" in Die Wildsboudjie (1985), Performed in Golden Rendezvous and in 'n Seder val in Waterkloof, Egeus in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1988).
Played in Spoke (which was his last appearance on stage), King Lear, Die Reënmaker, The Seagull, Vergelegen, 'n Wingerdstok sal Rank, Die Wildsboudjie, 'n Blommetjie vir Ans, The Government Inspector, Eurydice, The Government Inspector, Die Onbekende Man.
He directed Die Bruidskool, Die Hemelbed (1962 or 1963), Pardon Meneer, Huis te Koop, A Pound on Demand, Mattewis en Meraai, Platsak, Die vonkel in haar oë!, Die Gelukkigste Dae van jou Lewe.
Film work has included roles in Kyk na die Sterre (1960), Die Spook van Donkergat (1973),
Awards
Among the awards he has won are the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award as Best Supporting Actor for "Dr Gompel" in Die Wildsboudjie (1985),
