The Institute for Creative Arts (ICA) is an interdisciplinary institute in the University of Cape Town’s Humanities Faculty.

It was formerly known as the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA)

Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA)

Founded by the University of Cape Town in December 2008 with a substantial fixed-period grant from the Donald Gordon Foundation, the institute set out to facilitate new collaborative and interdisciplinary creative research projects in the disciplines of Music, Dance, Fine Art, Drama, Creative Writing, Film and Media Studies.

Interdisciplinarity is a key theme of the institute and projects are imbued with innovation, collaboration and dialogue with urbanism and community.

An Advisory Board comprising Heads of Departments of all Performing and Creative Arts Departments at UCT helped to shape contexts for the instigation and development of projects by students and staff, as well as a wide range of institutions and individuals outside the university.

The Institute for Creative Arts (ICA)

Launched under the new name on 5 April 2016 as an interdisciplinary institute in the University of Cape Town’s Humanities Faculty, with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Institute continued the work done by GIPSA.

Africa Centre

Infecting the City Festival

Described as a "provocative, site-specific, public art intervention that resonates with and challenges people to connect with each other and the City, through art", it is planned and executed with the specific intention of being sited and staged in the public domain, and is free and accessible to the public. It provides an opportunity to bring high quality, thought-provoking art, music, dance and performance out of theatres and galleries and into the streets and public areas of Cape Town’s Central Business District (CBD).

This is undertaken in partnership with the Africa Centre
