John Cartwright (194*-)is a scholar, teacher and academic administrator, as well as a creative writer and performing artist.

Biography
He studied at the University of Cape Town and Oxford University, and has had many years of experience as teacher, researcher and administrator in universities in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Canada. He began his University career in 1965 when he was appointed a lecturer in English at the University of Stellenbosch for a few years, went on to a distinguished teaching career at the University of Cape Town, inter alia serving as Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1991-1994) and head of the English Department (1996-1997).
In 2001 he began working on innovative projects in community policing and is currently a Research Fellow at the Global Risk Governance programme at the University of Cape Town.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Besides his academic activities, he has long had an interest in theatre and performance, beginning with his involvement with the newly founded Drama Department at Stellenbosch University.
As actor
Stage performances in the Stellenbosch period included roles in Faust (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1966), Die Koning Sterf (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1966), The Rivals (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1967) and Arms and the Man (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1968).
As playwright
He wrote a nativity play called A New Birth (performed in 1982), .
