Cosi è (se vi pare) ("So it is (if you like)" is a play in three acts by Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936)[1]

Widely known in English as Right You Are (If You Think So) (or equivalent).

The original text

A play about seven respectable, middle-class characters in a comfortable, bourgeois parlor arguing over their perceptions of a mysterious woman seen at the window of a nearby building, it is an adaptation of one of his own short stories (Signora Frola and Signor Ponza, Her Son-in-Law, published in 1915).

Written in 1917 and first performed at the Teatro Olímpia in Milan on 18 June, 1917.

Translations and adaptations

The play has seen many English translations, usually titled Right You Are (If You Think So) or Right You Are — If You Think You Are, among other variations. The first was Right You Are! (If You Think So) by Arthur Livingston (E. P. Dutton & Co., 1922)

Translated from the original Italian into Afrikaans as Jy's Reg (As Dit Vir Jou So Voorkom) ("you are right (if it appears like that to you") by C.G.S. de Villiers and adapted for radio by S.J. Pretorius.

Performance history in South Africa

1960: Broadcast in the programme Meesterdrama by the SABC's Afrikaans radio service on 28 June.
