The Young Writers' Festival was an initiative to develop the talent of young South African playwrights, inaugurated in 2000. The idea was born out of the Barney Simon Young Directors' Festival which has run at the Market Theatre since 1998.

Founded by Lara Foot-Newton at the Market Theatre in 2000, in commemoration of director Barney Simon.

In her time there she founded the Barney Simon Young Directors' Festival in 1998 and the Young Writers' Festival in 2000 -jointly referred to as the Barney Simon Young Directors and Playwrights Festival.
