The original text
The first of Aron's plays to be set in South Africa, it is a study of a man’s decision to abandon his dreams under the pressure of reality.
First published in Theatre Two, edited by Stephen Gray, 1981, and subsequently in Seven Plays and Four Monologues, David Philip, 1985.
Performances
It opened at the Space theatre in 1978, later played internationally at The Kings Head, London, The Edinburgh Festival.
Performances in South Africa
Stage
1978: First staged in 1978 as part of a double bill at The Space (Cape Town) with Robert Patrick’s My Cup Ranneth Over. Directed by Jenny Pichanick and Alyce Sylva, with Gillian Burl, Andrea Fine, Errol Hart, Jenny Pichanick, Corinne Willoughby and John Worsley. Design by Alan Pool and stage management by Tony Voss and Arthur Benjamin.
Also done at The Intimate Theatre, Johannesburg
1984: Directed by Themi Venturas and performed by post-graduate students from the Department of Speech and Drama, University of Natal (Durban) at the National Arts Festival Fringe, 1984.
Television
1980: Televised by the SABC, directed by Manie van Rensburg with Henry Goodman, Grethe Fox, Percy Sieff and Jenny Pichanik. Won the SABC-TV Best Play Award and the Tonight Award for Best Single Drama.
