He was a member of the company of players recruited in England and brought to South Africa by  [[Henry Harper]] in 1884. In Harper's opening production in the newly built [[Theatre Royal]] in Cape Town, he played "Mr Gregory" in ''[[The Two Gregories]]'' (Dibdin), and presumably other roles in the rest of the season.
