Not to be confused with the author and playwright Fred W. Broughton (1851-1894), whose play Withered Leaves was often performed in South Africa and Australia

While stationed in Cape Town , he is also listed as a stalwart of the Lanarkshire Dramatic Club of the 99th Regiment, specifically mentioned by F.C.L. Bosman (1980, p. 265) in respect of the 1869 production of Villikins and his Dinah (Burnand).
