The original text
It opened at the Comedy Theatre, London, towards the end of 1893, produced by Comyns Carr, and at the start of 1894 put on in New York by Charles Frohman at the Empire Theatre.
The text was originally published in 1893 by Clay and Sons and in 1901 by Samuel French.
Translations and adaptations
Twice filmed, in 1916 as a British silent film and in 1921 in an American silent version by John M. Stahl.
Performance history in South Africa
1897: Performed in Cape Town during January by Edward Sass and a company under the management of the Wheeler Brothers.
