Sam Phillips (1948-2021) was a multi-talented singer, dancer, actor, director, producer, writer, and music composer.

Biography

Sam Phillips died on 16 January, 2021, at the age of 72.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Stage work

He worked at The Space in the 1970s, acting in The First South African, The Incredible Jungle Journey of Fenda Maria, Lysistrata S.A. and The Sacrifice of Kreli.

He had a role in Dark Voices Ring at The People's Space Theatre in October 1979.


Internationally he appeared in Athol Fugard's Master Harold and the Boys in New Orleans.

He appeared in Separate Development in 1980.


Film and TV work

He had a role in the short film Senzeni na?, nominated for a Oscar in 1991, and appeared as "Themba" in The Caretaker (written by Thulani Mkhize, 1999).

Appeared in such TV programmes as Phamokate, Backstage, Soul City, The Wild and Isibaya.
