The original text
Written by Teengs for performance by the Rederijkerskamer Aurora II in 1869, the play is based on a critically influential historical event, i.e. the killing of the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief (1780-1838)[1], and his men in 1838, after having just signed a treaty with the Zulu king Dingane at Ungungundlovu in Natal[2].
