A popular melodrama set in Russia, it was first produced at the Comedy in 1884 became a popular vehicle for Max Beerbohm Tree and his company, with long runs at Theatre Royal, Haymarket, London till deep into the 1890s. Performed in Australia on 12 November 1887, by a local company featuring inter alia Herbert Fleming.
