The South African Republic (not to be confused with the Republic of South Africa) was an independent and internationally recognised state, that was located in and encompassed the Transvaal region of South Africa from 1852 to 1902 and had its capitol in Pretoria.
Not to be confused with the later Republic of South Africa (acronym RSA), the formal name given to the Union of South Africa when it declared independence from the British Commonwealth in 1961.
The republic was known as Het Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek in Dutch, die Suid-Afrikaanse Republiek in Afrikaans, and was also referred to as the ZAR or the Transvaal Republic.
