Emilie Melville was born on January 19, 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA as Emily Tretheway, the daughter of actorand playwright and director Robert Jones (Robert Jones Trethway) and actressand singer Julia Miles.

She was also an actress, known for the films Illusion (1929) and The White Sister (1915).

She was married to the actor, baritone and company manager Guglielmo Verdi (1854-), with whom she toured.

First appeared at the Melbourne Opera House on 6th October 1875, then formed her own opera company in 1880, and toured the empire, visiting Australia and South Africa.
