Johan Coetser (1952-) is an academic, lecturer and critic.

Also publishes as Johannes Lodewikus Coetser and as J.L. Coetser.

Biography

He studied at the University of the Orange Free State and at the University of South Africa (UNISA). In 1991 he obtained a doctorate from the University of South Africa with a thesis entitled Die geleentheidsdrama by N.P. van Wyk Louw . (“The Occasional Dramatic Works of NP van Wyk Louw”)

He is a professor in the Department of Afrikaans and Theory of Literature at UNISA, and his research interests lie at the intersection of Afrikaans drama and theatre, and cultural studies. Encompassing such matters as drama, prose, children’s and youth/young adult literature.

He is married and has two children.

Contribution to South African theatre, film, media and performance

He has published numerous articles on Afrikaans drama in scientific journals, made many national and international conference presentations, and delivered other contributions that include drama reviews in newspapers and academic journals, reports to publishers on drama manuscripts, and reviews of scholarly articles on dramas submitted to accredited journals.
