The Centre for Theatre and Performance Studies (CENTAPS), Stellenbosch was founded by Temple Hauptfleisch in 1994, under the auspices of the University of Stellenbosch (US) and housed in the US Drama Department. Its aims were to undertake research on South African drama, theatre and performance, and to provide support and facilities for visiting scholars and students. Published the South African Theatre Journal and collected information for a web-based database and the A Companion to South African Theatre and Performance (COMSAT) (later renamed the Encyclopaedia of South African Theatre and Performance or ESAT).
