Balthazar Verhagen (1881-1950) was a Dutch born theorist and teacher of drama and playwriting.

Biography

Born in Amsterdam, he became the director of the Toneelschool in Amsterdam in 1915, a post he held till 1939. He was also a private lecturer in playwriting at the University of Amsterdam (1924-1929).

In 1927 he wrote and published a standard Dutch work on playwriting, entitled Dramaturgie.

In 1939 he left Amsterdam for South Africa, settling in Pretoria, where he died in 1950.
