There appear to have been a number of Dutch plays called Schijn Bedriegt ("appearances deceive").
Contents
Schijn Bedriegt by M.P. Rosmade, 1859
A short Dutch play ("klein-drama") by M.P. Rosmade (1818-1871)[1].
The author's name also found as "M.P. Ros Made" or "M.P. Rosm'ade", all used as pseudonym by novelist and historian Evert Masdorp.
The original text
Published in the Jaarboek voor Rederijkers, 1859, for use by the Rederijkers.
Performance history in South Africa
1862: Performed in Dutch by the rederijkerskamer Aurora as its first production in August, along with the one-act play Rocco (Wijnstok) and recitals of lyric poetry.Billed as having ostensibly been written by some local referred to as "Neef Paul" ("Cousin Paul"), but the date suggests it was most probably the Rosmade text of 1859.
Schijn Bedriegt by A. Schepens, 1866
Subtitled "blijspel met zang in één bedrijf" ("comedy with music in one act"), this play by A. Schepens was published in the series Bibliotheek van oorspronkelijke tooneelstukken by Donné, Antwerp, 1866.
Schijn Bedriegt by Thomas Bernhard, 1985
This is a 1985 Dutch translation of Bernhard's German text Der Schein Trügt (published 1983, performed 1984), and in its Dutch version apparently the most performed of Bernhard's plays in the Netherlands.
