John Thos. Buck (17*-18*) was probably a Cape Town businessman and was involved in the running of The African Theatre, Cape Town.
In 1818 he became treasurer of The African Theatre, and in the 1830s gradually took over the property, becoming the sole owner by 1828. In the face of a growing anti-theatrical feeling among the citizens in the Cape he first announced the first attempt to sell the theatre on 21 March, 1838, and eventually sold it in March 1839 It soon theareafter became a church, to be known as St Stephen's Church.
