Born Betty Botha in Cape Town, the daughter of Minna Freund and Judge C.L. Botha. Married to Leon Hugo.

She was a founder member of the Libertas Theatre Club in Stellenbosch, responsible for setting up the society in 19**. . *** Became a lecturer in English at the University of South Africa and later the Pretoria Technikon.
