Studied drama at the University of Cape Town (graduated 1979).

Career

Terry Norton has lived and performed in both London and New York. Her work in theatre, film and television is extensive.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Acted in The Rise and Fall of the First Empress Bonaparte (Pieter-Dirk Uys, 1977), in Candaules Commissioner and Dolls (directed by Richard Grant and Michael O’Brien). She had roles in Faces in the Wall (Pieter-Dirk Uys, 1980), "Nora" in A Doll's House ( 1995), "Mrs Campbell" in The Elephant Man (1998),"The Wife" in Neil McCarthy's The Great Oudoors,

Together with the cast comprising Vanessa Cooke, Timmy Kwebulana, Gcina Mhlophe, Fiona Ramsay, Thoko Ntshinga and Neil McCarthy, and in collaboration with its director Barney Simon, she helped write Born in the RSA which opened at Upstairs at the Market in August 1985 before moving to the main theatre.

Starred in Lanford Wilson’s Burn This at Upstairs at the Market in 1989. She starred in Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden at Upstairs at the Market in 1992 and Purgatorio.

In 1995 and 1996 she appeared in a number of exciting and diverse roles at the Baxter Theatre, including Nora in A Doll's House, the mother in Beautiful Thing, a mentally disturbed nurse in Misery and some very strange Berkoff characters in Greek.

She was seen in Madame de Sade 1997 and The Elephant Man wherein Norton played the role of Mrs Kendal in 1998.

Her television work includes Daisy de Melker, Egoli, Westgate, Heritage and many more - an she starred opposite Michael Caine and Sydney Poitier in the film One Man, One Vote.

International films and series include appearances in The Adventures of Sinbad (1996),

She is the recipient of numerous awards and nominations for her acting.

Won the first Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Most Promising Student in 1978.
