Home Affairs is a play by Michelle Douglas

The original text

The initial idea was proposed by Neil Urmson, i.e. to create a show dealing with having a midlife crisis in a South African context, and the text was written by Michelle Douglas. The play does this by looking at the frustration and stress facing two South African men from different backgrounds, trying to get something sorted out at the department of home affairs.

Their relationship starts out politely, with a certain sense of camaraderie brought on by the shared experience of having to deal with the system. This then evolves into an us-versus-them situation, rather than a black-white issue.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

2023: Performed at Sandton’s Theatre on the Square from February 21 to March 11, directed by Michelle Douglas, with Sello Ramolahloane and Lawrence Joffe.
