Dock Road Theatre
The Dock Road Theatre - a theatre at the Cape Town Waterfront
Also written as Dock Rd Theatre.
History
In 1990 David Kramer and Renaye Kramer became partners in an entertainment complex housed in Cape Town’s Waterfront development. The intimate theatre was opened in a historic building, what had been South Africa's first electric power station (opened 1882). Called the Dock Rd Theatre, it put on a number of plays and musical productions in its six years of existence. Ninety percent of the work was original South African writing and this vision was pursued without any state subsidy or grant. Taliep Petersen and David Kramer’s Fairyland was the first musical production to be staged and it won the FNB Vita Award for Best Musical and played to capacity houses all over South Africa. More than a 1000 performances and three and a half years later it closed in Cape Town.
Other works produced in this venue include Kat and the Kings, Take the Floor, David Wood's Cinderella.
The complex later became a music venue (The Warehouse) and later a huge CD Warehouse (Tucker, 1997).
