Audience: General definition

The word audience, in the sense of a group of assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert, or meeting, is used generally in South Africa, while spectators is reserved for sporting events and listeners for radio. (In Afrikaans the term used, gehoor , also means "to have heard", even when one is talking of audio-visual performance forms and media, such as theatre , TV and film)
