He aided the company of players recruited in England and brought to South Africa by [[Henry Harper]] in 1884. In Harper's opening production in the newly built [[Theatre Royal]] in Cape Town, he was responsible for the musical direction for ''[[Faces in the Fire]]'' () and ''[[The Two Gregories]]'' (Dibdin), and presumably other productions during in the rest of the season. On this occasion he also composed and arranged a "Grand Inaugral March" to mark the occasion.
