Originally founded as the ''[[Tydskrif vir Wetenskap en Kuns]]'' ("Journal for Science and Arts"), as an [[Afrikaans]] language mouthpiece for the [[Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns]], it was split into two interdisciplinary vocational journals in 1960, both issued quarterly and called the ''[[Tydskrif vir Wetenskap en Tegnologie]]'' (''[[Journal of Science and Technology]]'' in English) and the [[Tydskrif vir die Geesteswetenskappe]]'' (lit ''[[Journal of Humanities]]'' in English).

Founded to specifically promote publication of academic work in [[Afrikaans]], both the journals have broadened their focus since the changes in the country and now accept articles in English, Dutch and German as well, and the titles has been adapted to reflect the international character, becoming the ''[[Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe/Journal of Humanities]]'' and ''[[Tydskrif vir Wetenskap en Tegnologie/Journal of Science and Technology]]''.
