In the early part of the 19th century, under British rule, there was a close link between Cape Town and the island of St Helena. According to an article on "St. Helena Theatricals" in ''[[The South African Commercial Advertiser]]'' of 12 October 1825 by someone who signed himself "N.L.".

Apparently monthly plays were performed on the island of St Helena by the garrison there, with some support of local inhabitants, attended and supported by the governor and his wife - enthusiastically so during Napoleon's stay on the island.

Among the plays specifically mentioned are ''[[The Forty Thieves]]'' (Sheridan and Colman), ''[[Speculation]]'' (Reynolds) , ''[[Douglas]]'' (Home).
