 The Department traces its origins to informal elocution lessons offered on campus from 1903 by various individuals,  such as Miss [[I. Gray]], which gradually led to speech classes for music students, presented formally by [[Monica Dolphin]] at the [[Stellenbosch University Conservatorium]] (a Conservatoire for Music) from 1921 onwards. Out of this came a formal course in speech and elocution, with formal plays being put on as part of the training programme.
