According to Wikipedia a [[Soundscape]] is "the component of the acoustic environment that can be perceived by humans. There is a varied history of the use of soundscape depending on discipline - ranging from urban design to wildlife ecology."

The range of meaning referred to includes the specific ''theatrical'' sense in which this encyclopaedia uses it, i.e. to refer to a meaningful design created by an acoustic artist through sound rather than (or in addition to) a set of visual, verbal and kinetic images.
