Formed part of the [[University of the Orange Free State Drama Department]] complex, housed in a prefabricated facility built by the University in 1972, and built to replace the original classroom in the main building which had been converted for the use of the department with its founding in in 1966.

The Scaena theatre space itself was a proscenium theatre, but could be adapted for theatre-in-the-round. Had a seating capacity of 150. The first official performance was on June 8 1972 with Die Vroue van Troje ("Women of Troy" by Euripides, translated by ***). Untill 1983 (when the Wynand Mouton Theatre opened), all departmental productions were staged here. Later mainly used for children's theatre and experimental work. Backstage space was extremely limited and lighting equipment was manual. There were TV studios in auditorium. Closed at the end of 2001 when the Department moved to new premises.
