Officially opened on 1 January 2004, the institution was part of the South African government's transformation plans for higher education and was made up of elements of three formerly independent universities. They were: the former [[University of North-West]], the [[Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education]] and the Sebokeng campus of [[Vista]] university.
