 Before her marriage she taught in Cape Town and became an active participant in amateur theatre, i.a. as a director for the [[Kaapstadse Afrikaanse Toneelvereniging]] ([[KAT]]) and as a judge for the regional festivals of [[FATSA]] and the [[Afrikaans]] [[Eisteddfod]].
