LE ROUX, Marlene. (1976-) Immensely dynamic arts manager, development manager and publicist. Born in Wellington on 17 September 1976, raised by her single mother, she attended Pauw Gedenk primary school and Bergrivier secondary school, before going to the University of the Western Cape to study for a B.A in Music, a B.Ed, a Diploma in Higher Education and a Diploma in Senior Management. Taught music on the Cape Flats, Paarl and in the Eastern Cape before becoming Subject Advisor in the Western Cape Department of Education. In 200* she was appointed as Director: Arts and Development at [[Artscape]]. In this capacity she ran a number of programmes, including an outreach programme, an Arts Festival and a Drama Festival for schools, and a technical training programme for the industry. She was also Director of the Western Cape Cultural Commission and Director of the Golden Arrow Foundation (1997-2004). Strongly interested in Afrikaans and cultural identity, she has served as Vice Chair: Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (the Foundation for Empowerment through Afrikaans) and on the Commission for the promotion and protection of the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic minorities. Has received numerous awards including the Demond Tutu Legendary Award (2001) for her work in youth development and the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (2002) from the French Government for her promotion of arts in economically constrained communities.
