(1889 – 1983) [[Afrikaans]] author, dramatist, civil servant and translator.

Born Hendri Leon Francious Maré in Pietersburg, on 14 September 1889, and went to school at the [[Boys' High School]], Wellington and in 1907 to the [[Eendragskool]] in Pretoria. He took a number of civil service courses over the years. He married in 1930 and the couple had one daughter.

He joined the civil service after finishing school and worked there for most of his life.
writing in his spare time. Primarily a writer of shorts stories and novels, he also dramatized two works, namely ''[[Mooi Annie]]'' and ''[[Die jonge du Pré]]'' .

Won the [[Hertzog Prize]] for Prose in 1920.
