In Afrikaans the word is used in the same way, though it also means “country” in certain contexts. However, it is often used metaphorically as an evocative and emotional concept containing both ideas, the core element of patriotism, linked to the notion of the volk (people, nation). Important element in the notion of Afrikanerdom (=Afrikanerhood), and a strong theme in bourgeois Afrikaans drama of the 1920’s to 1950’s. See J.M. Coetzee, 199* on this issue.
