 Born [[Karina Lou Bekker]] in Graaff-Reinet in 11 April, 1945, J.P Bekker (a town clerk) and Anna M. Bekker (a school teacher and bookkeeper). Due to the itinerant nature of her father's work, she grew up end got her early schooling in various places, among them Pearston,  Paarl and Barkly West, before completing her schooling at the [[Hoër Meisieskool Oranje]] in Bloemfontein. She then studied at the [[University of the Orange Free State]] ([[UOFS]]), obtaining a BA with majors in English and History, and a Senior Teaching Diploma. She married [[Temple Hauptfleisch]] in 1968 and is the mother of IT Company director Anzel Mercker and theatre director, designer and writer [[Gaerin Hauptfleisch]].
