John Lata started performing as a teenager in plays such as ''[[Crime Doesn't Pay]]'' and ''[[ Pikinini]]''. He was empoyed as an actor by North West Arts in the late 1990s.

==Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance==
For North West Arts he performed in ''[[Survival]]'', ''[[The Suit]]'', ''[[The Island]]'', ''[[Urban Reality]]'', ''[[Messiah]]'', ''[[The Stick]]''. He appeared in ''[[Township Fever]]'' (1989), ''[[Comrades Arms]]'' (2000).

He toured the Netherlands with ''[[Sikhulu]]'' (1995) and the UK with ''[[Jozi=Jozi]]''. He performed in ''[[On My Birthday]]'' at the Lincoln Centre, New York, in 1997.
